Here is what we did at our church for an effective, cheap way of getting a deep boomy kick:

I thought it was interesting.

The yamaha sub-kick hardcore...every setting I've heard it in it sounds great. We used to use the 112 but after hearing d6 live at a victor wooten concert, we bought the it and have never turned back. Even got our sound engineer on board with us to use d6 over 112 (he was VERY partial to the 112). just like thomas said, even if you don't have a great sound system, i can gaurantee it will give you the punch in your chest! Tis true that you can't soley go off of specs, there are to many factors that are in effect in a live setting - sound system, preamps, room size/build, etc. Just find a way to test them and compare with your own ear...(start with the d6 tho!)

Another vote for the D6. good times had by all..

Currently we use the Shure 91 on the inside and another one on the outside which i can never remember...

but if we had the budget i'd spring for a d6.

A few ideas for you

D6 (as most people have said) is a great mic.

I use that as the close mic inside the drum around 3" from the beater skin.

then i recommend a RE20 by ElectroVoice that sits with the bell of the grill inside the front skin at the hole.

if you're after extra snap to the kick i have used a frankenstein SM57 where the capsule is taped along side the beater and the shaft of the mic is taped to the stem of the beater.

for a really phat recording kick i recommend making a bass tunnel out of a rubberized door mat over the front of the kick making the shell deeper. then stick a SE Gemini Valve mic (large diagram) at the end of the tunnel, just off the floor.

thats just a suggestion of course.

Surprised that no one has mentioned the 902... It's not very common like the shure or akg.

But for rock? solid. You have to have a good source though.

I've used the beta 52/d6/d112. I think they're all quality mics and can work great for you. Mess around with the positioning of the mic and eq it well and it should sound good.

I'm curious what bwack used on tour/in studio/and at his church. Bwack, do you have a preference?

On the Church Music tour, I know we used one inside and outside of BWack's kick (both Sennheiser products). I will let Daniel, the master of FoH, answer with specifics. If you went to one of the shows, you know his kick sounded killer (thanks in part to Daniel and his use of our 6 d&b subs!)

we used the Sennheiser 902 for outside mic.. actually just inside the hole.

and a sennheiser 901 inside.

I like it. sounds good. I like the D6 too, and sometimes the D112, and sometimes the beta 52.. depends on the day of the week and style of the drummer really. I don't have too much of a preference I just like whatever I can make sound good at any given moment!
