i've found that i can get usable results from lots of different mics. we've got an assortment of 57's and 609's, as well as one 906. 58's aren't half bad either if that's all you have.
as much as microphone choice plays a big role in the sound that you hear, don't underestimate mic positioning. a beat up old 58, properly positioned, will likely sound better than a much more expensive mic that's just randomly stuck in front of a speaker. i've been finding lately that i like the sound i get when my mic is about 10-12 inches back from the grille. it seems to better capture the sound i hear when i'm just sitting in front of my amp and playing.
