Switchfoot gains independance
Quite shocking in my opinion. Here is what they said:
Switchfoot gains independence: As many of you have already heard through our blog, this is an exciting month for the foot family. After several years of trying to make things work over at Columbia we have officially severed our ties with sony to pursue making music independently. We are thankful for the incredible success that our partnership has produced over the years, yet within this ever changing business there can arise differences in vision and goals. These differences have now come to a point where we feel like parting ways would be best for us, and best for sony.
As a hands-on band, we feel so grateful for our newfound freedom. We are continually dreaming up ways to bridge the gap between the audience and the stage; this feels like an incredible step in that direction. A huge thank you to bob, amy, nicole and tim over at columbia who were there from the beginning. We would also like to thank our musical family here in the states and abroad for sticking with us through these columbia years. We couldn't have done it without you!
We'll have more information for you as things shape up. In the meantime, here are several projects already in the works for the next year:
four jon foreman solo ep's
(tentatively titled fall, winter, spring, and summer)
the real sean jon
(a collaboration between jon foreman and sean watkins of nickel creek fame)
a new switchfoot record in '08
(the first 13 tracks were cut earlier this month!)
Switchfoot is one of my favorite bands. I've been following them since Legend of Chin. We'll see how this goes. Is this a sign of things to come?

I'm glad to see they recognized some of the folks at Columbia. It's always easier to break away than to break in...

I may be (just my thoughts) because some of the new songs that Jon is writing are not very radio-friendly to the main stream..
I was at a conference that he was at called "Q" and he played some stuff he had just written and it was amazing. He did this song that was basically the Lord's prayer, and then another one that was basically straight from scripture... perphaps that is what the EP's will be about?
I have been huge fan for quite a while. These are guys who really want to change the world and not merely sell albums. They are involved in many cool organizations and projects to help touch the world.
It is tough to live where faith, art and commerece collide, but I think Switch is doing a pretty good job of it, and I pray that God will continue to use them as He wills.

I pray that they do go back to their Christian roots. I miss the old Switchfoot.

I love all their CD's, but they have gotten more and more difficult to decifer the message. They are quite vauge here lately. New Way to be Human will always be my favorite album of theirs. Let That be Enough is a great song. I'm spinning it right now. Love it, it's so real. That's what I've always loved about Foreman's writings. He's real.
As for the new CD's, I'm going to have to figure out how our store will be able to get them. They are one of our top selling artists, right behind Casting Crowns, MercyMe and Chris Tomlin.
My thought is they are between labels. I'd find it very surprising if they didn't get resigned with someone else, but their message seems to say that they are happy with being indies. Only time will tell.

I was in love with the Foot for a long time... like alot of us older fans the love has wained as of late... I think I am excited about this. Maybe the some of the over-production will chill out a bit and they can just be awesome again.
